Majuro, June 18, 2009 - Mr. Knut Ostby, United Nations Resident Coordinator and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative presented his credentials to President Tomeing on June 16, 2009. President Tomeing on behalf of the Marshallese people welcomed Mr. Ostby to the Republic of the Marshall Islands.
Mr. Ostby recently became the UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in April of this year. He oversees 10 other countries including the Republic of the Marshall Islands (Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu).
The United Nations presence in the small island states is becoming noticeable. In 2008, the UNDP Joint Presence Office was established in the Marshall Islands proving to be an essential counterpart to the Republic of the Marshall Islands. According to President Tomeing, “The UNDP Joint Presence Office here in Majuro has proven a valuable asset to us, especially in relation to progress made to advance Marshall Islands work plan.” The UNDP and various U.N. agencies have been actively working with the RMI government on its Millennium Development Goals and with other projects such as the RMI Support to Parliament Project, Small Grant Programme (GEF SGP), and on other projects.
