The 40th Pacific Islands Forum (40th PIF) was held on August 5 and 6, 2009 in Cairns, Australia. Member countries Australia, the Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of Nauru, New Zealand, Niue, Papua New Guinea, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Republic of Vanuatu, Republic of Kiribati and Republic of Palau attended the 40th Pacific Islands Forum.
Associate members were New Caledonia and French Polynesia.
Observers to the 40th Pacific Islands Forum included Timor-Leste, Tokelau, Wallis and Futuna, the Commonwealth Secretariat, the United Nations and the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission.
Long and short term issues were discussed at the 40th PIF- Pacific Maritime Safety, Climate Change, Cairns Compact on Strengthening Development Coordination in the Pacific, Pacific Plan, and Bulk Procurement of Petroleum are about a few of the issues that were tabled for the 40th PIF.
