President Litokwa Tomeing departed last Friday, September 18, 2009 to attend the 64th United Nations General Assembly. President Tomeing is also scheduled to attend other meetings such as the World Leaders Summit on Climate Change, and the Alliance of Small Islands States (AOSIS) leaders Summit on Climate negotiations. In addition, President Tomeing is also looking forward to attending the UN Security Council meeting on Nuclear Weapons use and testing slated to be moderated by President Barack Obama.
According to Deputy Chief Secretary Fred J. Pedro, next week will be an extremely busy one for World leaders gathering in New York as there are numerous important meetings scheduled so close together for them. Mr. Pedro said many heads of state and government from over 192-UN member states are expected to be at the UNGA and associated meetings to discuss issues crucial and vital to mankind and the planet.
Among these, Mr. Pedro said is perhaps the most pressing issue facing the entire global community, is climate change. The international community is under extreme pressure to reach a consensus on a post Kyoto agreement later this year in Copenhagen. Last year at the 63rd UNGA, President Tomeing called on the global community to declare an all out war against climate change.
In addition to these global leaders meeting, President Tomeing has also been invited by the United States Government to join other Pacific Island leaders in a meeting with Secretary of State Hilary Clinton in New York.
Following the UNGA and associated meetings President Tomeing and his delegation will head on to Arkansas to visit the largest Marshallese community outside the RMI in Springdale. Nitijela Speaker Jurelang Zedkaia will join President Tomeing during this part of the trip where they together with Foreign Minister John Silk will officially open the RMI consulate office in Arkansas.
