5th President of the Republic of the Marshall Islands

Majuro - Iroij Jurelang Zedkaia of Majuro Atoll, was sworn in as the Fifth President of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, on Monday, November 2, 2009 in the Nitijela of the Marshall Islands General Assembly Hall.

In his inaugural address, the President called for unification of the Nitijela (Parliament), asking members to put aside their differences and to work together to bring about a better tomorrow for the people of the Republic of the Marshall Islands. The new president outlined some major work ahead, including boosting up the education and health sectors of the Marshall Islands, the Copenhagen Summit, among other issues. The president recognized the United States, Japan, Republic of China (Taiwan), and global organizations for their close friendship and assistance provided through the years towards the development of the Marshall Islands.

Along with President Zedkaia, the new Speaker of the Nitijela of the Marshall Islands, Alvin T. Jacklick, also took the oath of the Office of the Speaker, followed by the re-appointed Cabinet Ministers Brenson S. Wase, senator from Majuro Atoll, now holds the portfolio of Minister of Justice, a post recently held by Senator David Kramer, also of Majuro Atoll.
