President Ma, Ying-jeou state visit to the Republic of the Marshall Islands

(Majuro, Republic of the Marshall Islands) President Ma, Ying-jeou and a 90-member delegation comprised of ROC (Taiwan) officials and staff, the Formosa Indigenous Song and Dance Troupe, and media group arrived Majuro for a five and half hour State visit. President Ma was greeted and welcomed by President Jurelang Zedkaia along with First Lady Hannah Jurelang Zedkaia. RMI officials, honor guards, students and faculty, and Taiwanese residents were also present to welcome President Ma and his delegation.

The welcoming ceremony was held at the Amata International Airport in which President Zedkaia reiterated RMI’s commitment to strengthening cooperation between the two countries and thanked the Government and People of ROC (Taiwan) for the assistances and generous donations provided to the Republic of the Marshall Islands. President Ma reaffirms ties with the Republic of the Marshall Islands and promise to deepen and strengthen cooperation in health and medical, education, science and technology, agriculture, and other cooperation with the Republic of the Marshall Islands.

Immediately after the welcoming ceremony, both Presidents and delegations were escorted to the President’s Office to conduct the bilateral meeting. Prior to the bilateral meeting the media group was invited to take pictures of the gift exchange between President Zedkaia and President Ma. President Zedkaia presented a local made model canoe and a handcrafted Obon to President Ma and in exchange President Ma presented a Taiwan brand mobile phone.

President Zedkaia and President Ma then proceeded to the Laninbit Park for the planting of the national flower, wutilomar (Guettarda steciosa).

Both Presidents then attended a presentation prepared by the ROC (Taiwan) Mobile Medical Mission and RMI’s Ministry of Health. The Mobile Medical Mission in collaboration with the Ministry of Health treated approximately 50 cataract patients and is expected to treat more cataract patients here in Majuro. Minister Amenta Matthew spoke on behalf of President Zedkaia emphasizing the importance of medical cooperation and needed expertise in the field. President Ma, then presented a list of donations to President Zedkaia, amounted to U.S. Dollars $142,000 in medical supplies and equipments.

The state visit concluded with a State Banquet hosted by President and First Lady Zedkaia. Highlights included the extravagant performance by the RMI Flag Dance group and the Formosa Indigenous Song and Dance Troupe.

This is President Ma’s first visit to the Pacific region and will continue his visit to Kiribati, Tuvalu, Nauru, Solomon Islands, and Palau.

President Ma and his delegation departed for the Republic of Kiribati at approximately 2:30pm Majuro local time.
