September 04, 2006
Opening Ceremony

Remarks by H.E. President Kessai H. Note
Republic of the Marshall Islands

Excellencies, Distinguished Representatives, Ladies and Gentlemen

Please allow me first to convey the warm greetings of the people and Government of the Republic of the Marshall Islands to our friends from Taiwan, Kiribati, Nauru, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu and our host, the Government and People of the Republic of Palau. It is always a joy to visit Palau and to enjoy the generous hospitalities that the people of this beautiful country are well known for. On behalf of my delegation, I wish to thank the host country for the excellent arrangements accorded to my delegation.

As this is the first Taiwan – Pacific Allies Summit to take place, it is only proper that I extend my country’s gratitude and sincere appreciation to the Republic of China (Taiwan) for supporting such an important Summit. The convening of this Summit reflects that our countries have continued to enjoy a special and long-standing relationship based on mutual respect and friendship. I would like to take this opportunity to convey the sincere gratitude of the people and Government of the Republic of the Marshall Islands’ to the Government and People of Taiwan for their continued assistance in our pursuit of national and regional goals.

The RMI enjoys its relationship with the Republic of China (Taiwan) through close cooperation in important fields such as fisheries, health, financial institutions, and capacity building. Today, we embark on a greater undertaking by joining together as allies of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to share ideas and address the common challenges we face as small island developing states.

On that note, let me convey that the RMI is confident that the discussions today will lead to enhanced cooperation between our Pacific Island countries and the Republic of China (Taiwan), both at the bilateral and regional levels. We remain certain that today’s discussions will only serve to bring our relations closer and to pursue the attainment of our shared goals and common interests.

Thank you.
